How Much Does It Cost to Swim With Humpback Whales in Tonga?

A practical breakdown of the cost to swim with humpback whales in Tonga: flights, whale days, lodging, meals and the extras people forget to budget for.

Swimming with humpback whales is a bucket-list trip, and the first question after "is it real?" is usually "what does it cost?" The honest answer is that the cost to swim with humpback whales in Tonga depends a lot on how you build the trip. A shared day tour, a private boat and a fully organised week all land in very different places. This guide breaks the budget into pieces so you can see what you are really paying for.

The four main costs

Almost every Tonga whale trip is made of the same four blocks: getting there, the whale days on the water, somewhere to sleep, and food. Everything else, from travel insurance to tips, is a smaller add-on. Understanding the blocks makes quotes from different operators easier to compare.

1. Flights

Tonga is far from most places, but it is easier to reach than people think. There are flights into Nuku'alofa on Tongatapu from Nadi in Fiji, Auckland and Sydney, so you can connect from almost anywhere. Flights are usually the biggest single cost for travellers from Europe or North America, and prices swing with the season. The whale season runs roughly July to October, which is also high season for flights, so book early.

2. The whale days

This is where operators differ most. Some sell single-day trips on shared boats, others sell multi-day packages on private boats. Vava'u has the most operators and the busiest water. Tongatapu has far fewer boats. Tongan rules allow only a few swimmers in the water with a whale at a time, which is why group size matters: the more people on the boat, the less time each person spends swimming. When you compare prices, ask how many guests are on the boat, how many swimmers go in at once and how many days are actually on the water. Our post on Vava'u vs Ha'apai vs Tongatapu explains how the islands differ.

Also ask about weather. Whale days can be cancelled by wind, and a package that includes buffer days is worth more than a cheaper one with none.

3. Where you sleep

Guesthouses and small lodges near the harbour cost much less than resort stays, and in Tonga you really do not need luxury. You need a bed, a shower, early breakfast and a short ride to the wharf. If you travel solo, ask whether rooms are shared and what a private room costs. Sharing is how many groups become friends fast, but you should know the price either way.

4. Food and the little things

Meals in Tonga are inexpensive compared with Europe, but lunch on a boat is rarely free unless the package says so. Budget for snacks, a few evenings out, a cultural day on the Sunday when boats do not run by law, and tips for the crew. Add travel insurance with medical cover and cancellation protection, and check that it covers marine activities.

What our expedition costs

For reference, here is how we price ours. Our Whales of Tonga expedition is 17 to 24 September 2027 and costs €6,950. That covers seven nights close to the harbour, all meals, five whale days on our private boat, a maximum of eight guests, airport transfers, wetsuit, mask and fins, and photos and videos of the group. A private room for the full week is €750 extra. It does not include international flights, travel insurance, a night in Nuku'alofa if you arrive early, the optional photo package, alcoholic drinks or personal expenses.

If you want to add Fiji, our Yasawa Paradise expedition starts the day after Tonga ends. Tonga guests pay €3,450 for it instead of €3,950, and booking both comes to €10,100 in total.

Ways to keep the cost down

Travel in the shoulder of the season, book flights early, share a room, and decide whether you want one big day or several. If you only have time for a single day, a shared tour may be the right call, though your time with the whales will depend on the crowd. If whales are the whole reason you are travelling that far, more days on the water is usually the better use of money. The bottom line

Add up flights, whale days, a bed and food, then add a safety margin of 10 to 15 percent for the things you forgot. Compare packages by what is included and how many swimmers share the water, not by the headline number alone.
