About this expedition
A week in Northern Norway with a small handpicked group, chasing northern lights, sharing warm meals, and heading into the water with orcas in one of the wildest places on earth. Professional pictures and videos of the group are included. On request: a full week private photo package.
If you’re someone who seeks more than just a holiday, someone who values meaningful experiences, genuine connections, and a sense of adventure, then this expedition is for you. We’re looking for open-minded, positive, and curious individuals who enjoy being part of a small, like-minded group and are excited to share unforgettable moments both in and out of the water. You don’t need to be an expert, but you should feel comfortable in the ocean, be willing to participate in group activities, and embrace the rhythm of the Arctic winter. We expect everyone to be respectful of nature and contribute to a warm, inclusive group dynamic.
Itinerary
Disclaimer: this itinerary is tentative — nature leads, we follow.
Day 1: Tromsø & a fjord crossing to the orca camp
Most important: arrive in Tromsø 1 day early (highly recommended), or very early on the day. Pickup point: the ferry, Hurtigruten Terminal, right in Tromsø city center. From there we travel north by express ferry to Skjervøy, then by our private boat into Reinfjord, a remote fjord camp reachable only from the water.
Day 2, 3 and 4: Orca sea days: snorkelling
3 days on the water, searching for orcas and humpbacks as they move with the winter herring. The last session, on day 4, is in the morning, before we head to the Lyngen Alps. Between sea sessions, enjoy thoughtful local meals and warm recovery time.
Day 5: Dog sledding in the Lyngen Alps
Dog sledding (mushing) is an exhilarating winter adventure where you glide across snowy landscapes behind a team of powerful, eager sled dogs, experiencing the thrill of the Arctic wilderness. In November, if there isn't enough snow yet, we swap in a backup activity.
Day 6: Reindeer camp / Sami Culture in the Lyngen Alps
Spend the day with local Sami culture, stories and reindeer traditions surrounded by winter landscapes. A calm, meaningful day with warm food, local voices, and time to take it all in.
Day 7: Back to Tromsø
Scenic drive through Arctic fjords and mountains, back to Tromsø city center, arriving around 12:00–13:00. Getting to the airport is on your own, so book your flight home for 16:00 or later. Adding a night or two before or after? Wonderinn rents glass cabins around Oslo and in Arctic Norway, where you sleep under a glass roof with the sky, and hopefully the aurora, right above your bed. You book those directly with them: https://booking.wonderinn.no/all-listings

Things to know
Best way to get there, and where is the pickup point?
Most important: arrive in Tromsø 1 day early (highly recommended), or very early on day 1. The pickup point is the ferry, the Hurtigruten Terminal, right in Tromsø city center. Book your hotel in the city center and it is within walking distance. Getting to the terminal is on your own, no taxi included. From there we handle everything: the express ferry north and private boat into Reinfjord for the orca days, the onward transfer to the Lyngen Alps, and your return to Tromsø city center around 12:00–13:00 on the last day. Getting to the airport is on your own, so book your flight home for 16:00 or later. Exact ferry times follow closer to departure. We recommend keeping your final flight flexible or adding a night in Tromsø, as Arctic weather can shift plans.
Will we see the Northern lights?
Winter is a beautiful time for northern lights in Northern Norway. The region is dark for long hours, and the aurora season around Tromsø runs from late August until early April. The lights are a natural phenomenon, so they can never be guaranteed, but clear, dark skies give us the best chance. We keep several evenings open in Lyngen and Reinfjord, away from heavy light pollution, so the northern lights can become part of the journey naturally rather than a rushed extra activity.
Suitable for non-swimmers?
Yes, non-swimmers can still join, but on the orca days they stay on the boat as whale watchers, not in the water. For the full experience, we recommend being a good swimmer: being in the water with the orcas is what this expedition is all about. The Arctic ocean is cold, wild, and safety-led. To enter the water with orcas, guests must be good swimmers and comfortable in the water, and the crew always has the final say based on conditions and training. All water entry is optional. Non-swimmers can still experience the whales from the boat, join the photography workshops, enjoy the food, sauna, Sami culture, landscapes, and the full rhythm of the expedition without pressure.
Will there be photos and videos?
Yes. Professional pictures and videos of the group are included. On request: a full week private photo package, just for you.
Why join with Maui?
We keep the group small, so you spend more time in the water and less time waiting on deck. We pick the right place at the right time of year, and we work with local crews who have known that water for years. A professional photographer joins every expedition, runs photography sessions during the week, and everyone gets the photo library afterwards. Everyone applies and has a short call with us first, because on a week this small the group makes the expedition. Most people come alone, and by day two you're all at the same table for dinner.
