Tonga is small, remote and not served by many airlines, which is part of why its humpback whale season still feels uncrowded. It also means flights take a bit of planning. If you want to swim with whales on Tongatapu, you fly into Nuku'alofa, the capital. Here is how to fly to Tonga from the main gateways, how long each route takes and what to check before you book.
International flights arrive at Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) on the main island of Tongatapu. The airport sits about 21 kilometres from central Nuku'alofa, roughly a 30 minute drive. Hotels, guesthouses and the harbour for whale trips are all in or near the capital, so you do not need a domestic flight if you stay on Tongatapu.
Do not confuse this with Vava'u, the northern island group that is also known for whale swims. Vava'u needs an extra domestic flight from Tongatapu. For the swim we run, you stay on Tongatapu.
Auckland is the easiest gateway. Air New Zealand flies Auckland to Nuku'alofa in about three hours, usually several times a week. If you are coming from Europe or North America, route through Auckland and allow a buffer for a long-haul connection. Book the long haul and the Tonga leg on one ticket where you can, so a delay is the airline's problem and not yours.
Qantas flies Sydney to Nuku'alofa, with a flight time of about four hours and forty minutes. Frequency is lower than from Auckland, so check which days it runs before you fix your dates. Most Australian travellers fly this route and arrive a day early to avoid a missed connection.
Fiji Airways flies Nadi to Nuku'alofa in about one hour and thirty minutes. This is the route to use if you plan to combine Tonga with a trip to the Yasawa Islands, and the combination works well on timing. Tonga is one hour ahead of Fiji, which matters for your arrival time. Our Fiji wildlife timing guide covers the other side of that trip.
The whales arrive from the Southern Ocean to breed and calve in Tongan waters between roughly July and October. September is a strong month, with calmer weather and mothers with calves close to shore. For a full breakdown, read our guide to the best time to swim with humpback whales in Tonga.
On our Tonga humpback expedition you only need to get yourself to Nuku'alofa. We include airport pick-up, and we suggest you arrive a day early. The next trip runs 17 to 24 September 2027 with a small group and licensed local guides. Applying is free.
